We are very lucky here in Cornwall as the Spring continues to develop but I know that lots of my readers from Atlanta, Georgia to Texas, to Vermont, and the far North of Canada are still in the throes of winter, so for you, here are Pooh Bear and Eeyore discussing the wintery weather.

Hip replacement!

Ha, Eeyore has some Canadian-tude to his wit, an in all likelihood would add ‘and there are no misquotes or black flies.
Here, and your connections in Georgia probably would not be happy, we view the southern states driving in a freak snow fall as hilarious.
Last week we still had -25C temps till Friday when the thermometer reached O and then Saturday +2C. Spring ? Yes I think so. But the temperature is not the deciding factor. The one sure sign spring has begun, is not the calendar but rather Maple sap started to run over the last two days. Its maple syrup time in this area!!!! Good news, as am down to the last half liter.

Also, my neighbours and friends across the way, just returned from the Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories (fulfilling one mark on the bucket list to see the Northern LIghts up close). She has had both knees and hip done. At -40C at night, when standing still the sensation in operated areas was definitely felt.

I find this fascinating and almost wish for cold weather to test it out – but not really! I wonder if the same thing happens in very hot weather…… 🙂

We loved watching how the Maple runs and is collected when we were in Vermont a couple of years ago. We have run completely out of the real stuff – another visit calls! 🙂

Memories of Sugar Maple dance long in ones head. Growing up my mother often made maple syrup outside over an open fire. But the year I remember most was when I was six years old. That year, the sap ran like Niagara Falls.( which incidentally, due to the cold winter this year, iced up to a mere trickle) She could not keep up to the two enormous maple trees we had tapped. An as the last batch finished off, the wood was running out. To my horror my little wooden toboggan even became fuel for the sweet cause. I recall crying my eyes out, declaring my dislike for this sticky shtufffs. On the upside, however unbeknownst to me, on the next Christmas, dear ole Santa placed a brand new six foot wooden toboggan under the tree. My fondness for maple syrup returned. Maple sugar is truly a beautiful thing.
In the province of Quebec especially, and to a slightly lesser extent in New Brunswick, though the two provinces bicker back an forth as to whom wears the crown, the product and the spin-off tourism adds substantially to the regional economy and the provinces as well, Their combined production exceeds 80 percent of world wide (the state of New Hampshire and the province of Ontario, second and third respectively if sources are correct . So if you have a sweet tooth for the shtufffs, hone up on your French, Quebec and New Brunswick is the place you wanna be in March. The last time I drove through New Hampshire, on my way to Nova Scotia, I chuckled when I saw New England maple syrup on the shelf, and at the very bottom of the bottle in small print, ‘product of Canada’ 🙂

Almost six years post hip surgery, and I still have no pain. Do you notice how cold that legs gets in wintery weather? I regularly feel like someone has stuffed me in a freezer! 🙁 A microwaveable gel handwarmer in my trouser pocket works wonders and keeps the leg really warm. I often think of my dear Granny who badly needed a hip replacement long before they discovered how to do it. We are so fortunate.

That’s wonderful. I must say that I am feeling better each day. I have yet to experience the cold leg phenomenon. I haven’t really been outside in the cold since the op was done – and, happily, it doesn’t get very cold very often in Cornwall. Thank you for the hint though. I will remember that next winter.
You are right about earlier generations. We are so lucky that the surgeons have the skill to take our pain away.

Thank you for my morning laugh. I’ll have to remember the earthquake comment the next time I hear someone complaining about the weather. It’s starting to warm up here but there’s a lot of snow and the temperatures are not quite there yet to start melting it away. Hopefully by the end of March or beginning of April we’ll see the last of it.

The first weeks are quite hard and harder for some than others. I am glad she is happy with her hip now. 🙂
