1 More than fifty walkers turned up today to watch the opening episode of Oxygen and to walk in the footsteps of their Suffragette sisters marking the Great Suffrage Pilgrimage of 1913. That was so brilliant! The play was inspiring and moving and then the walk started, led by the actors, singing songs from the play. What a day!
2 The children and I only walked at the start and then waved everyone off (There will be more photos very soon from the walkers themselves) We took the children to play in the sand at Mount’s Bay……

3 …….. and finished off the day with a delicious Cornish ice-cream, thinking all the afternoon of those of my dear friends walking the trail at the same time as those amazing women walked exactly 100 years ago today. The Suffragettes in 1913 walked for themselves and for those who couldn’t and that’s what my people did for me today. Thank you.

I am just now getting caught up with your blog. ( was forced…against my will … to take a couple of weeks nap… 🙁 But back now and your blog is the first I am visiting. )
What a day it must have been one hundred years ago! Full of uncertainty and surely a bit frightening too. The costumes really give it authenticity.
And while the ice cream may have been the highlight for the little ones, they someday will be very proud too.

You are right – it must have been quite daunting but weren’t they strong women? I so wish you could see the play. It tells the story of the past but also brings women’s concerns right up to date as we are still worried about child poverty, still trying to combat domestic violence and still disturbed by trafficking.
I hope you are back on your feet/computer and hope all is well now with you. 🙂

Thank you Sally, you do your Granny proud every day of your life – you are one of my role models! It was so wonderful to be a part of such an important commemoration – I walked in memory of women like your Granny Wiseman and I walked to inspire to my two amazing daughters Maia and Evie… They did the whole walk without complaint and with great joy! The next day was littered with comments like little sparkling gems…”My shoes hurt…”says one, “The Suffragettes wouldn’t moan about that!”. retorts the other! “We are part of the Stop Page 3 Campaign now Mum…I mean why would you have a picture of a woman with no top on next to really important news about people dying in Syria?”…Silence…
Shall we retrace those historic steps on the 19th of June every year? An annual event to keep us Feminists topped up! I’ll be there for definite…Lots of love, Mandy, Maia and Evie xxx

What brilliant comments from your beautiful daughters. I feel that the play should move on to touring all schools after this run finishes. Everyone, of whatever generation needs to know more about the struggle – and how it continues. The play had so many notes of the present in its echoes of the past. I kept wanting to shout out, YES! Let’s work to stop child poverty now! Let’s…..

What an amazing day! Women need to know what their ancestors experienced. Some of my students viewed the film, “Iron Jawed Angels” about the suffragettes in America and were dumbfounded at what they saw.

Thank you. I did help to organise the walk and was the co-ordinator so that it happened. Both my cronky hip and having the Grandchildren here stopped me walking but I did my bit – though I was tearful waving them off! 🙂

I’m there in the middle of the 6th photo, with my Votes for Women scarf and a photo of the Holloway Brooch that my Great Granny was awarded for her time in Holloway where she was force fed. What determination these women had! What fortitude! 🙂

Thank you so much. I agree – so important to remember and to inform and that is what this play hopes to do as they tour the whole route of the 1913 march. I’m going to see the play proper tomorrow evening with one of my daughters and again on Friday with Mr S. 🙂
