1 This morning I made carrot cakes and was very taken with the colours, especially the pattern made by the teaspoon of vanilla essence in the beaten eggs and oil.

2 Talking with Don today about caring for our Earth, I had to go and look up a half-remembered piece written by Chief Seattle. I found it and here it is. I hope you’ll agree that the words and the sentiment are very important and very beautiful.

3 I have had this little model for many, many years. It was made by S, a very talented writer in one of my English classes. He was a restless sixteen year old who needed encouragement, both to believe in his own talent and to sit still! I discovered that, given something to model with, his concentration on the literature we were studying increased hugely. One day, at the end of the lesson, he presented me with this precious little model, made of Blutak. It’s me – curly hair, long skirt, a necklace and a scarf, carrying books and a heavy bag of files and with a huge grin on my face. I was so touched and I have kept this little treasure ever since.
Thank you, S. I hope you have become the writer I thought you could become. Maybe you went on to make models in the style of Wallace and Gromit! Maybe one of my ex-pupils who reads this will tell you of this post!

I love LOVE that you quoted Cheif Sealth (Seattle). I grew up in Seattle and now live on the Tulalip Indian Reservation 30 minutes north of Seattle The indigenous people here are very connected to the earth and to nature and are in fact called “The Whale People”. Its exciting to think that across the world you and I are strangers yet still connected- just as the quote says. Thank you again for bringing that connection to light and for bringing Cornwall closer to my world once again 🙂

What a delicious memento of your teaching days and your own creativity in allowing that boy the space to be himself…
Funnily enough I remembered lessons much better when I was drawing, and my brown paper covered books were covered in coloured drawings, that my teachers never commented on, just letting me be. Since I was always at the top, I think they must have realised that it wasn;t in-attention, but concentration…( back in the late forties early fifties!!!)

That’s a lovely picture that you paint of your decorated paper covered exercise books (I remember the start of the year when our first homework was to cover all our new books that way!)
S was a very special individual and I so hope he went on to use his writing talents. 🙂

Like it ! The perfect image of an English teacher. So many days of slogging through Cleveland slush and snowstorms with two bags of papers to be graded, an armload of books, and a head full of half-baked teaching plans. It took a true sense of the essence of another person to create this little sculpture.
