Super Bowl, Maritime Museum and Painting

06 Mar

1   The Lemon Butter Cake (recipe to come later) that I was making this afternoon called for a very large bowl so I brought out the Family Super Bowl!  It has a brilliant design that allows it to be tipped up and remain stable when the mixture is being beaten and it holds 10 1/2 pints! It has been used for making Christmas puddings for years and years!

2   At The Maritime Museum in Falmouth a replica Bronze Age boat was launched today after months of work. It’s 16 metres long,  made from green oak and has been built using replica Bronze Age tools. It’s a sewn plank boat, a kind of boat unique to England and Wales.  The hull of the boat was made by stitching wooden planks together as nails had yet to be invented. You can find out more here.

Isn’t it? And so much work went into the research and the making – brilliant! 🙂

What a wonderful bowl – family heirloom indeed…
And what an intriguing story about the boat… so it was still quite a traditional shape even then??……

Interesting isn’t it? All those years ago, a boat was as we recognise it today.
I love using that bowl and knowing that my Mum used it and, as a little girl, I was called upon to stir the Christmas pudding, along with my brothers and little sister in that very bowl. 🙂

Great pics! Love the ones of the boats.
My girl has a set of glass bowls that we use regularly. I think she’s the 3rd generation to have them.

I love these things with history. It gives me great pleasure (as I’m sure it does your girl) to mix where others in former years have mixed – and sometimes old family recipes too.
All the best to you both
      🙂

The “painting” is fantastic. I can see a couple standing in a field of flowers. The man is tall, wearing a white jacket. His female companion is quite a bit shorter, wearing a blue dress with a white lace collar and bodice.

Would you mind terribly if I saved a copy for my art collection folder?

Of course. That’s what I saw too! In fact, this is a panel from the side of the Maritime Museum which had rusted and gathered seaweed and barnacles! Zoom in and see the detail – but I still love it as a ‘painting’, the artist being The Sea and have printed it off!
      All the best

Thank you. No human artist will ever surpass the ability of Nature to create works of beauty.

I had a nice yellow super bowl very similar to yours – a family heirloom, until I dropped it last summer. Oops.. it will be missed.

I’m sure it will. It is lovely to mix where others have mixed before me!
      All the best

That’s a fantastic boat! But I don’t know if I would feel very safe in it for long! The lemon cake sounds delicious. I’ve given up cakes and biscuits for Lent but this sounds like the perfect thing to end it on in a few weeks.

It’s delicious and easy to make. I’ll post the recipe in time for you to end your fast! 🙂

Now that is my kind of Super Bowl.

I wonder about that boat on a hot day.

I watched this morning on the web cam until it froze up after they left. Tash said she was there by the pink buoy, can you tag her on Phil’s photo? Your photos must have been taken after they came back?

Yes, we went down after the launch all thanks to you and your Facebook posting! We were sorry to miss the launch but at least we could get close.

We’ve got a bronze age boat in the museum here. It’s free for me to get into so I’ll see if I can get in there soon and take photos.

I can see why that made you think of Monet. It looks like one of his fields paintings

I’ll look forward to seeing your photos.

Could you see what the ‘Monet’ actually is? 🙂

I don’t know the name, but I think it;s the one with the women in the hats. I’ll have to try and find the one I mean

          Sorry – I meant the photo I put up – which isn’t actually a painting. 🙂

Can’t find it, so it may not have been a Monet. It could have been a Rembrandt or Van Gogh or someone else

Certainly though it looks like an Impressionist painting. 🙂
