Redruth Town Clock, Primroses and The Piano Guys

27 Feb

1  In our main street, Fore Street, is the Town Clock which has been there since the 1700’s. In 1828 the former wooden tower was demolished and replaced by a stone tower.    In 1904 Clock Tower was extended by a section because new buildings had grown up which prevented the miners up the hill from seeing the clock face. Few people had clocks in their homes at this time so it was important that the clock was visible all over town.  As the plaque says, in 1841 the open arches at ground level were closed in for use as Police cells!

2   I love primroses, so delicate and coming into flower in all our hedges now as a herald of Spring.

3  Today I’ve been introduced to The Piano Guys by Alex Autin. Check out her blog – it’s fascinating and do listen to this lovely rendition of Twinkle Lullaby and marvel at the Utah desert skies. I promise you, it will be a beautiful moment of tranquility in your busy day.

I was born in the now Warrens Bakery, 50 yards from the Redruth Town Clock, this is home to me, and a part of Cornish history that has not changed.

How lovely to hear from you! Are you still in Redruth? May I ask which schools you went to in the town? Thank you so much for calling in and taking the time to comment. 🙂

I love seeing functional historic structures, still doing what they were built to, regardless of time.

    (And i love Alex’ site!)

I have to ask: who is that statue of, and what is he doing?

I thought someone might ask! He is a tin miner and I’ll feature him next week but actually he annoys me! He is standing with his arms outstretched holding an ingot of tin in one hand and a pick in the other but no miner ever stood like that! Copper and tin were extensively mined around here and there’s lots of history to share. 🙂

My first thought was that he must be a fisherman 😉

The statue standing in Fore Street Redruth and looking down the town is of a Cornish Miner, he has a pick in one hand, and an ingot of Cornish Tin in the other, the statue represents Redruth Town as once being the mining capital of the world, and the rich history that Redruth and Cornwall has with its links to mining and steam engine technology.

Dear Sally. Thanks for the piece about the Redruth Town Clock today. I have lived here for over 3 years, walked past it nearly every week, and never even noticed it. Maybe its height prevented me from seeing it when close, or maybe I have my head down when slogging up the hill.
on my friday visit this week, I will stop and give the clock tower a jolly good perusal!
