1 Yesterday’s post about Granny’s tablecloth brought some interesting comments, particularly telling me that it wasn’t tatting around the edge but Filet Crochet. This took me to Granny’s beautiful old sewing box to look more closely at the very fine metal crochet hooks which I think may have been used for this delicate work. I don’t know what each item in the box is used for so if you do, please tell me!

2 The Christmas Tree hat arrived safely and was immediately worn by T. Her Dad did a fine job of trying to capture her image for me!

3 It’s been a dramatic weather day with squalls of hailstones followed by sunshine. I love the drama of this sky behind our house.

Being Canadian we tend to think of ourselves as chapeau connoisseurs when it comes to winter gear; that is one fine touque an gran T makes even more so.

The pointy tools are called stilettos, and I think the ivory tool third from the top might be a kind of bodkin. I looked in my little antique leather zippered sewing case and there is a much plainer one in it. I bought it in Wiltshire I believe, in the 70s. This was fun!

A Puzzlement that one! More Googling required. I am thinking those very fine hooks might be Tambour Hooks.

The hat was a success and T looks so cute in it! We’re having a break in the fall weather here in western New York state. 72-degrees today. Predicted for the 30s tomorrow.

As Shelagh has already said the latched hooks are for rug making and the oval ivory gizmo is a tatting shuttle – no idea about the third one down though – never seen one before – how lovely that you have them all together – I have many of my Gran’s sewing bits and bobs, including masses of very fine beige yarn for darning stockings ( and spare suspenders and corset laces!)

Isn’t it lovely to think we are handling/using things that have been being used for about a hundred years! Granny was born in 1888.
I have lots of the stocking darning yarn too and no idea of what to do with it. 🙂

My best guess would be a bodkin of some sort – if the broken end was tapered it might have been to re-thread elastic in the days when knickers had elastic in the top of them. My Gran was born in 1899 and is much missed. She would have loved this blog as she had a marvellous capacity to find beauty and interest in life’s little things.

The two long hooks with knobs on are Afghan hooks; 2nd hook from bottom is a latch hook for making rugs; next one up is for another kind of tool for rug hooking with yarn, you thread a strand thru the eye, pull up loops from a strand held under the canvas with the hook, then pull the strand thru them; two hole punches; a very nice little tatting shuttle; some more unidentifiable tools (I have one of those things third down from the top, can’t remember what it is for right now). Thank you! That’s fabulous. I had thought it might be you who would be able to identify them. 5 and 7 up from the bottom are the very tiny crochet hooks but the hooks are so small they don’t show. I’ll add another photo of the hooks to try to show you. 🙂
