Life, the Universe and Everything, Driftwood Art and William Morris

06 Mar

1  Met my good friend E at the Gylly Beach Cafe in Falmouth this morning. We talked about life, the universe and everything and had a walk along the beach in bright sunshine. Gorgeous osteospermums in flower from the beach up to the road.

2  This piece of driftwood art, called ‘Houses and a Bicycle’ by Jo Perry is a delight to me every day. We bought it many years ago and it has never failed to please us both. I love the little seagulls on the roof tops and chimneys and the tiny bicycle leaning against the railings.

You can see more of her work at http://www.joperry.net/

3  I love these words from William Morris: “If you want a golden rule that will fit everything, this is it: Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.” That’s why we have the above piece of art!

My maxime exactly, and that of my late husband. We collected only that which spoke to our hearts – never because ‘one day it might be valuable…’.

I always feel that a little of the person who created what I’m holding, or looking at, stays with that something. The remnants of creativity generated by the artist/artisan remain part of a tactile quality that emanates from the object created. Fanciful? Perhaps, but the I’m an incurable romantic.

I’m completely with you there. I always ask for the details of the artist. I want to know who they are and what their inspiration was. 🙂

I love the William Morris quote, and couldn’t agree more. 😀
